What’s the difference between natural stone countertops and granite for countertops?

Granite is one category within natural stone. “Natural stone” also includes quartzite, marble, soapstone, and others, each with different patterns, hardness, and care needs.

  • Look & variation: Natural stone slabs are one-of-a-kind. Granite typically shows granular movement and speckling; quartzite leans toward veining and translucence; marble has softer, more dramatic veining.
  • Durability: Granite and quartzite are generally harder and more scratch-resistant than marble or soapstone. Granite handles daily cooking and traffic very well.
  • Heat & etching: Granite tolerates heat; quartzite too, though use trivets for prolonged exposure. Marble can be etched with acids (lemon, vinegar).
  • Finishes: Polished for shine and easy wipe-downs; honed for a softer, matte look that hides micro-scratches; leathered for texture and reduced glare.
  • Project fit: For busy kitchens, granite and quartzite are frequent picks; for a vanity or low-traffic bar where drama matters most, marble may be worth it.

At our slab viewings, we’ll compare pieces side by side and talk through where each stone performs best in your home.

Both are excellent, but for different reasons.

  • Composition: Quartz is engineered (crushed minerals + resin), giving it consistent color and pattern; granite is 100% natural, so every slab is unique.
  • Care: Quartz is non-porous and easily wipes clean with mild soap and water. Granite is porous but simple to maintain—periodic sealing plus everyday cleaning keeps it looking crisp.
  • Heat & UV: Granite tolerates higher heat; quartz can discolor with prolonged high heat or strong UV, so trivets and sun management help, especially near south-facing windows or outdoors.
  • Style: Choose quartz if you want a uniform white, concrete, or charcoal look. Choose granite if you want organic movement and depth that only nature creates.
  • Seams: Both can have tight, well-planned seams; quartz patterns often “hide” seams due to uniformity, while granite’s movement can be vein-matched for beautiful flow.

We’ll show you real-world samples so you can see how quartz and granite behave under task lighting and next to your cabinet and flooring selections.

Most kitchens do well with a yearly check, while some dense granites go longer. A simple water test helps: place a few drops; if the area darkens within a few minutes, it’s time.

  • Signs it’s due: Water no longer beads, oil spots linger, or you’re wiping more to keep it streak-free.
  • What to use: A penetrating, food-safe sealer designed for granite. Application is usually wiped on, let dwell per the label, wiped off, then buffed.
  • Daily care: Mild dish soap and water with a soft cloth; avoid harsh abrasives and strong acids. Coasters help with coffee and citrus.

Brief contact is typically fine, granite is very heat-tolerant, but repeated placement of extremely hot cookware in the same spot can fatigue finishes or the sealer over time.

  • Use trivets for items straight from the oven or grill, and especially for cast iron (which holds heat longer).
  • Avoid thermal shock (very hot item on an ice-cold surface).
  • For quartz surfaces in the same kitchen, always use trivets—resin binders don’t love high sustained heat.

Most projects complete ~7–12 business days after templating (scope dependent). A common flow looks like this:

  1. Slab selection (at our Denver location),
  2. Templating (digital measurements, appliance/sink specs confirmed),
  3. Layout approval (vein direction, seam positions),
  4. Fabrication (CNC cutting, edging, polishing),
  5. Installation (set, level, seams, sink set, final clean).

Complexities like full-height splashes, mitered waterfall ends, or large islands can add time; we’ll map milestones before we start.

Yes. Remnants are a smart way to get premium materials for powder rooms, laundry counters, desks, and niche shelves.

  • Sizes: Inventory changes weekly; we’ll check your sink cutout, backsplash height, and overhangs against what’s on hand.
  • Edges & cutouts: You still get professional edging, faucet and sink cutouts, and polishing—just scaled to the project.
  • Value: Often lower material cost with the same fabrication standards.

Send rough dimensions (run lengths/depths, island size, backsplash height) plus sink/cooktop models through the form below. We’ll reply with a ballpark and available times. Prefer in-person? Book a Denver showroom visit to compare slabs next to your cabinet, tile, and flooring samples, and talk about edges, seams, and cutouts. After you pick a slab, we schedule templating and share a written proposal with scope, timeline (~7–12 business days after templating), and a simple prep checklist. Ready now?
